Hashtags are an important tool to have when promoting your brand on social media. However, overusing Facebook hashtags can be just as harmful as it is helpful.
Hashtags – you either love them or you hate them. Hashtags have become so popular that people include them in social media posts, text messaging and even verbal communication. Adding a “#” before a phrase enables the key word or phrase to act as a search function and links users to other posts that include the word or phrase. Hashtags were first seen on Twitter and have since been incorporated across most social media vehicles including Facebook hashtags.
According to the article, “Too Many Facebook Hashtags Seriously Hurt Your Brand” by Matt Petronzio, brands that overuse hashtags on Facebook receive less interaction with fans.
Matt explains that a recent study on Facebook showed a direct correlation with hashtags and user interaction. Companies that used only one or two hashtags in Facebook posts received the most interaction. Meanwhile, posts that contained three or more hashtags received significantly less user engagement. Users can be distracted by overusing hashtags. Keep your posts relevant by limiting the use of your social media hashtags.
